v0.83.4: the 0.84 update goes into alpha testing
0.84 is in a phased alpha with selected players. The wiki tracks the alpha, so some numbers there are placeholders.
This note was about the next update rather than a change you could play. 0.84 went into alpha with a selected group, tested in phases. The devs said it touches a bit of everything: quality-of-life changes, new classes, new features, a large UI overhaul, and a new tutorial.
Worth knowing if you use the official wiki: during the alpha it's kept roughly in line with what testers can see, and any numbers there either come from the alpha or are placeholders. Item loaning and the updated Forge were the areas they were most careful about sharing early. Alpha players can talk about it but were asked not to post screenshots or recordings yet.
The target date given was Monday 5 October, with late October named as the likely fallback.
